Momma Said

In times of stress, it is hard to formulate a plan to forge ahead with your life.  With the work load of people’s lives today, stress is a common denominator in everyday life. Work, kids, commute times all seem to be problems everyone deals with.  In some households parents have to hold down multiple jobs to meet the demands of today.  The same problems have been around for decades, but it seems today’s fast paced lifestyle demands more of everyone.

The old adage of stopping to smell the roses doesn’t hold the same meaning anymore.  I want to slow down life so I can enjoy the little things.  Time goes by so fast that you don’t realize what you have missed until it is gone. Momma Said, “Put the phone and computer down and spend some time with each other.”  That seems impossible to accomplish today and it makes me sad to watch people with their eyes glued to a phone while walking, eating out or even in the movies.

Kids today are missing out on so much.  They are missing the real camaraderie of having a sleepover with friends or a camping trip with the whole family out in the forest.  I miss those times myself but we sure did have some fun. Catching fish for dinner, playing in a stream or just being one with nature.  Mom and Gran had the knack for making anything fun.  We got to cook over an open fire and the tricks Mom had to do that were like magic to us when we were small.

Kids today don’t even want to go outside, they are afraid of getting dirty.  We were at our top game when we were having mud fights or jumping in a puddle.  Getting dirty was part of being a kid and I will say I ate my share of dirt growing up.  Momma Said, “Kids of today need to wake up and be a part of life without an electronic device in their hands.”  What are they going to do if someday there is no power to run those devices?  They won’t even be able to find their way around because their noses are always stuck in their phone.  Without GPS they won’t even be able to read a map.  I can hear it now, “You want me to read a map, what is that?”

Crispy Crab Nuggets

1 pound fresh crab meat
3 slices of white bread, crust removed or packaged bread crumbs
1 egg beaten
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 tablespoon parsley

Put breadcrumbs in food processor so they are chopped up fine(to save time). In a large bowl, mix together egg, mayonnaise, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, and Old Bay seasoning. Add breadcrumbs and crab meat and mix by hand to avoid breaking up too many of the lumps. You may need to break up the very large lumps however so the crab balls will stay together. Shape into 24 balls and fry in batches in hot oil until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels. Serve with your favorite sauce or don’t use any! These are so good.
