Lenten Services planned for Thursdays
Lenten Services for this season are to begin at noon at Parsons Presbyterian Church in Parsons. This week’s speaker will be Rev. Eli Hostetler.
A light lunch will follow the Lenten service. Those services are sponsored by the local ministerial association and will continue each Thursday for the following six weeks. You are invited to join us in praising our Lord and the fellowship of friends and neighbors.
Parsons Alumni meeting
The Parsons High School Alumni Association will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Parsons Country Inn. All alumni are invited to attend as plans are being made for the annual PHS Alumni banquet to be held May 29.
Friday, March 12
Talent in the Mountains competition
The Harman Band Auxiliary will be hosting Talent in the Mountains ~ A Community Talent Show on Friday, March 12. WDNE’s Joe Danger will be the special guest emcee. The event will be held in the Harman Gym.
Doors open at 4 p.m., the Harman Band and Choir will perform at 5:15 p.m. and the talent show will begin at 6 p.m. Cash Prizes will be awarded in student and non-student categories. Entry fees are $10/individual $15/group.

Buckwheat dinner in Mt. Grove
The Mt. Grove Volunteer Fire Department is having a buckwheat cake and sausage dinner starting at 11 a.m. March 7. It’s all-you-can-eat and costs $6 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 11, and under 6 are free. From Thomas, take U.S. 219 north about four miles to Mount Grove and watch for the signs.
Winter Fair in Barbour County
The Barbour County Community Educational Outreach Service clubs are once again sponsoring the Winter Fair to be held March 12-13 in the barn at the Barbour County Fairgrounds.
The fruit tree and grapevine pruning and grafting class will be offered by Roger Nestor on Saturday. Call the Extension Office to register. Barbara Wolfe of the Extension Office will be testing pressure canner dial gauges on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your gauge in to be tested.
Crafters can call the Extension office at 304-457-3254 to reserve a table. Fee is $10.
The kitchen will feature the sale of homemade vegetable soup, beans and cornbread, hot dogs, ham and lamb sandwiches as well as cakes and cookies.

Tax Assistance available in Parsons
One day only, weather permitting, free tax assistance will be available at the Five Rivers Public Library.
The session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is made possible by the IRS and Fairmont State University in cooperation with Five Rivers Public Library.
Winter bird walk at the Refuge
It is still winter, but the days are getting longer. Folks are seeing a variety of woodpeckers at bird feeders. Join volunteer Casey Rucker for a walk titled, “Winter Birds” at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 13.
Meet at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge visitor center on W.Va. 32. Dress for the weather, in layers and wear comfortable walking boots or shoes. Bring binoculars, or use a pair of ours. Carry water if desired. The program is free and will last about two hours. It is co-sponsored by the Refuge and the Friends of the 500th.

Timberline Four Seasons Resort will present a weekend of Rhythm and Blues with Big Rock and The Candy Mountain Boys. The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, March 12 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 13.

Ruritan Club elimination dinner
The Hendricks Ruritan Club is sponsoring an elimination dinner on Sunday, March 14 at Camp Kidd Park beginning at 1:30 p.m. Donation is $25, for a dinner for two. The Blackwater Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 17 at Trisha’s Restaurant at noon for lunch. The meeting will follow at 1 p.m. All members are urged to attend.

Parsons chapter of T.O.P.S. (Take off Pounds Sensibly) will be holding an Open House at the Church of God at noon on March 27.

Boy Scouts holding pancake breakfast
This will be the fifth annual Boy Scout Troop 96 Pancake Breakfast, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the Davis Fire Hall. The scouts will be serving pancakes, sausage, biscuits, fruit cup, sausage gravy, juice and coffee. Adults $6; children 12 and under $3. Proceeds go the Troop 96 High Adventure Trips, summer camp and gear.

Maysville Fire Company Gun Bash
Maysville Volunteer Fire Company will be holding a Spring Gun bash on April 10 at their station in Maysville. Prizes will be drawn every 15 minutes starting at noon and ending at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and there will be free food provided by the fire department for ticket holders and non-ticket holders that pay $5 at the door.

Voices sponsoring talent competition
Voices from The Earth Inc. will have its annual Performing Arts Youth Talent Competition at 7 p.m. April 17 at the Tucker County High School auditorium. The competition is open to students in grades 9 – 12, in the categories of dance, music (both instrumental and voice) and theater. Prizes of $250, $150 and $100 will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners, respectively. The first place winner will also be invited to perform at the VFTE annual fundraiser. Thomas fireworks
The Thomas Volunteer Fire Department’s fireworks display as part of Mountaineer Days will be Saturday, July 3. The rain date will be Sunday, July 4, Chief Joe DiBacco announced.
