Tucker County lowers tax rates

PARSONS – On Tuesday, Tucker County Commissioners did something unusual in today’s economy – they voted to lower the county’s tax rates.

“We lowered the levy rate to 14.20 percent,” said Commission President Mike Rosenau. “The state recommended we lower the rate to 14.24 percent, but we as a commission felt comfortable with lowering them to 14.20 percent.”

Rosenau said the state came in and evaluated Tucker County and advised the county assessor to get the property values in line, saying property values were assessed too low in the county.

“We tried to adjust the levy rates to balance the two,” Rosenau said. “Our hope was leveling out the taxes to generate about the same amount we had last year. We did good with our revenues last year, so our goal was to generate the same revenues this coming year.”

For the fiscal year ending June 30, Tucker County levy rates were 14.30 percent.

The next meeting of the Tucker County Commission is slated for 4 p.m. April 23 in the Tucker County Courthouse Courtroom.
