ELKINS – The Lady Mountain Lions are just one game away from a sixth consecutive appearance in the state basketball tournament.
Tucker County won a delayed Region II Section II final Monday night, beating East Hardy 61-44 in a game that wasn’t that close. The victory sets up a showdown with Clay Battelle (12-7) tonight, with the game starting at 7 p.m. at Tucker County High School.
Cee Bees coaches were on hand at Elkins High School, and they witnessed a fantastic stretch of basketball that included a 28-2 run from midway through the first quarter until late in the second. “The first three or four minutes we definitely showed a little bit of rust,” Coach Tom Carr said of the period where Tucker County led just 8-6.

Tucker County was supposed to win its first sectional game easily, and the Lady Mountain Lions didn’t disappoint.
The girls started the game on a 19-2 run, then had an 11-0 stretch in the second quarter and 16-3 in the third. By the end of the game, the Lady Mountain Lions had a 69-25 victory over the Yellow Jackets and a berth in Saturday’s sectional final against East Hardy.
The Lady Cougars beat Pendleton 43-34 Feb. 24 to advance to the sectional final.
“This was a great confidence builder,” sophomore Lauren Whitehair said after Wednesday’s victory. “As long as we play defense, we’ll be all right.”
Audra Hull led the way with 17 points – including five 3-pointers – and Amber Evans had 13 points and five steals.
